Last weekend three NOR juniors competed at the Junior Inter-Regional Championships as part of an East Anglian team made up of 17 juniors. The event consists of an individual on the Saturday, and a relay on the Sunday. East Anglia had a very successful weekend, and came 7th overall out of 12 regions, the highest they’ve placed for some years. The most impressive result of the weekend was Matthew Clarke’s (SUFFOC), who won the M14 course of the individual day by over a minute.

The NOR juniors also performed well in a high-class field, with Steven Denby placing 27th out of 41 in M14’s, Sam Nicholls 32nd on M18 and myself gaining the joint second highest place for East Anglia at 11th in the W18 class, annoyingly only a few minutes off a top 5. Tim Harrison (SUFFOC) also came 11th on the M18’s, despite running up a class.

In the relay’s there were more good results. Matthew Clarke, Tim Harrison and Bryn Wilkinson (SUFFOC) led the boys relay team into 9th place, and the girls team of Daisy Partridge (SOS), Chloe Cracknell (SOS) and myself also finished 9th. Steven Denby and Sam Nicholls were in the same team and placed 25th, coming two places above the 3rd East Anglian team. East Anglia also gained another podium (3rd) in the Ad Hoc from Josh Partridge (SOS), who ran first leg in his team.

As always it was a weekend of great orienteering and a lot of fun! It was great to see such a large team travel across to run, and hopefully we can continue bringing more juniors into the East Anglian squad. Coming 7th overall was a great achievement, especially since at our home JIRC’s in 2012 we only managed 10th.
