Congratulations to our new British Champion, Barbara George.  Other successes and news in this item.

The local orienteering season kicks off this coming Sunday at Horsford. But more of that anon, because there is major national success to report first. Six of us travelled to the British sprint & middle distance champs in Staffordshire at the weekend and, in a break with tradition, one of us returned home with a gold medal! The person in question is Barbara George, triumphant in the W80 class. Combined with victory in the JK, its been a quite a year for Barbara, even by her own high standards. I think Barbara is NOR’s first national champion since Ed Kelleher in 2002. Many congratulations!

Also at the weekend, Ella Gilbert confirmed her status as one of the top juniors in the country with 8th place in the sprint and 10th in middle-distance. Club Captain Glen Richardson came 5th in the M35 sprint, missing a medal by an agonizing 2 seconds. Peter Leverington was 12th M75 at middle-distance, while Jonathan Gilbert and Peter Waldron were 22nd and 40th respectively in M55.

For some (particularly Ella), September is one big event after another. This weekend we have a team in the Peter Palmer junior relays. Good luck to James, Katja, Sam, Kieran, Mathew and Ella, NOR’s first team in this competition for many years. Then on the 21st it is the London City Race (entry deadline approaching) and the 28th is the Junior inter-regional champs. Good luck to everyone representing NOR and/or East Anglia at any of these events.

However, for most NOR members, Horsford Heath is where the action is this month. The local season kicks off with a colour-coded event this coming Sunday (14th). Courses available are white-green. If its been a few weeks/months since you last had a dibber on your finger, get yourself down to Horsford on Sunday and dust off those cobwebs. The following NOR event will be on October 19th at Pretty Corner but in the meantime there is also a SUFFOC event at Ickworth on September 28th.

Happy orienteering,

Glen
