Organiser’s Comments
Thanks to everyone who came out today to Broadland Country Park (Houghen), it was great to be back in this lovely bit of wood again.
I started organising this event nearly 2 years ago. As an organiser our first job is to get permission for using the land and finding a suitable area for carparking. Getting the permission to use the area proved very time consuming as this area is owed or managed by 5 different people, charities and councils and trying to find out contacts proved very tricky, but I got there in the end so hopefully next time it will be easier.
Thanks so much to everyone who helped out on the day, you made my life very easy as I didn’t need to go out asking for help.
Well done to David and Nita for planning some great courses, all the comments I heard were very positive. And thanks to Peter Woods for controlling this NOR event.
Good luck to the clubs who will be progressing to the next round of the Yvette Baker Shield or Trophy.
Karen.
Planners’ Comments
Some years ago I did a Planners course with Mike Chopping and this led to me offering to plan a course sometime last year…well the year went by and I almost didn’t think I’d get the opportunity, but sometime in the Autumn I was put in contact with David who was mapping Broadland Country Park. Thankfully David is also a keen and competent planner (he’d drafted out a full set of courses before I’d even started), and very good at organising things, so whilst I did have a go at planning, due credit must go to David for Green-Brown and helping me get together White-Short Green to a good standard. Also for organising the hardware, setting up, and generally inducting me in all I needed to do. Somehow whilst starting setting up at the crack of dawn I invented a new way of hanging a control kite on a stake that is way more complicated than necessary, but otherwise it all seemed to go smoothly.
Lots of lovely feedback on the courses; Broadland park is also a fantastic area with lots of different types of vegetation including marsh and it seemed to give satisfaction. Thanks to Peter for controlling for us too.
Hoping to have another go at planning sometime soon.

Broadland CP required a complete remap with the previous version being first created back in 1995! The map was completed in Spring 2024 which then became a seemingly never-ending series of updates all the way through to a few weeks ago as the area is so dynamic. Broadland CP, with it’s really lovely mix of woodland, was a pleasure to plan courses for. A big thanks to Nita for all of her hard work in sharing the Planner’s duties, and also to Peter for controlling, Karen for organising the event and securing all the permissions, and to all the volunteers on starts, SI, and control collection for making the day a huge success.
For those into stats, today I covered 26.3k, taking just over 26,000 steps – time for a rest I feel!

Controller’s Comments
I am not aware of any issues with any of the courses today*, and several finishers asked me to pass on their appreciation to the Planners, Nita and David. This area is much more enjoyable to run on than a quick glance at the map would suggest, with good visibility and runnability (the bracken having died down somewhat thanks to recent frosts) to favour “straight line” route choices as an alternative to path running. David also made an excellent job of updating the map.
*I know some were confused by the profusion of mini-hides in the semi-open area in which 207 was located. However, mapping these would be impractical and unhelpful, and the two hides that are mapped are distinct in comparison.
So – well done to NOR for an excellently organised and planned event. (I’m not just saying that because I got to borrow a padded hi-vis jacket from Karen to keep me warm after I ran out of coffee).
