Organiser’s Comments

Thanks to everyone who came along to run at the Bowthorpe Urban today and thanks very much to everyone who helped out. A special thanks to Glen for planning, Peter for controlling and Karen & Neil for event coordination – all seemed to go well. Thanks to the Norkie Pub for opening early and providing us with use of their facilities. They seemed pleased with the additional custom, so everyone was a winner there. See you at the next one…

Planner’s Comments

This part of Bowthorpe was mapped for use in the British Sprint Champs last year, but ended up not being used once we realised we could fit heats and finals both onto the UEA campus. Many thanks for Caroline Louth for the excellent map. I started planning today’s event as a knockout sprint, then a 2-part sprint, but eventually decided that give the probable number of entries, a simpler event was probably better. In the end we had about 70 runners, who seemed to enjoy their courses.

One thing I need to apologise for is getting carried away when cutting some of the circles (e.g. 204 and 228) to the point where they became almost invisible. Otherwise, feedback was positive.

If you enjoyed Bowthorpe, do tell your friends. I suspect it does not feature on many people’s bucket list of must-see places. But the low-traffic network of irregular alleyways and courtyards makes it a nice labyrinth for orienteering, so I’m sure we’ll use it again in a few years.

Many thanks to my assistant Planner Marcus for his help putting out controls and test-running some of the senior courses (even though he was too young to run them on the day). And thanks to eagle-eyed Controller Peter for spotting my various mistakes on draft maps.

Controller’s Comments

The Bowthorpe estate is ideal for sprint type Urban orienteering and I think Glen’s excellent courses made the most of the area, with a high control count meaning concentration was needed throughout the course. Finisher’s comments seemed to confirm this.

A couple of control circles had been somewhat over-cut, meaning that they were too easily missed while running with the map.   I failed to spot this while checking the final courses (magnified on a computer screen), so I apologise to those of you affected, and a lesson learned for me.

Well done to Ian for getting the pub to open early to provide facilities, and thank you to all the NOR team for their efforts on the day to make this an enjoyable event for all concerned.
