  • Wednesday Night Training

Wednesday evening sessions start again on Wednesday 30th August, at UEA. This will be your last chance to get lost on campus for 2 years, as the area is embargoed from September until the British Sprint champs take place there in Aug 2025.

We will gather at the Earlham Park car park for an 18:45 start, with a choice of 2 courses available.

A 2.5km course that stays within Earlham Park (best for juniors/beginners)
A 3.5km course that features a section of urban orienteering amongst the campus buildings

Both courses will have a mass start at 18:45, and the courses are gaffled. This means everyone runs the same distance, but some of the controls are different, so you can’t just follow the person in front all the way. This simulates orienteering relay races, mainly for the benefit of those taking part in relays over the coming month, but should provide some fun head-head racing for all.

For map printing purposes, it will be useful to know who’s coming, so please let me (Glen) know if you’re coming, and which course you’d like to do, at captain@norfolkoc.co.uk

  • Medals, medals, medals!

    Medals, medals, medals!

Congratulations to Marcus Richardson, who recently won 2 gold medals at the British Championships weekend in Northern Ireland. The Sprint championship took place in the city of Armagh on Coronation day. The morning heat took place in the grounds of Armagh Planetarium, and Marcus successfully navigated round the solar system to run a clean race and win by just over a minute. This proved crucial because it meant he started last in the final. So, when the 8 finalists all came together midway round the tricky final course, Marcus just had to stay with them to ensure the win, and his first British title.

The middle-distance championship took place the following day in the very different surroundings of Drumkeeragh Forest in County Down, where the contours and vegetation made the going hard. Marcus made his move on legs 4 & 5, both on contour features in green forest. Having gained a 2 minute advantage over his nearest rivals on these 2 legs, Marcus held on to win by 44 seconds.

Marcus then spent the rest of a glorious sunny morning playing rugby and football in the assembly field with his fellow M12s, and is looking forward to the rematch at the Scottish 6 days.

Glen also won a  bronze medal in the sprint.

  • Club Championship Results (2022)

Recent club championships have been blessed with good weather, but not this year at Felbrigg! Persistent heavy rain, but warm – personally I loved it!

Before the event, I’d thought that Mick Liston, Barbara George and Marcus Richardson would win the major trophies, so the event through up a couple of surprises (for me at least).

Barbara George did indeed win the Carol Towler Salver to become Women’s Club Champion for the sixth time. Kim Eden was second and Gillian Pilgrim third.

Glen Richardson won a close battle with Ian Renfrew for the Barry Chilvers Cup. If Ian had run 24 seconds quicker then he would have been the winner. This was Glen’s second win, the last one being in 2013. Roger Parker was third.

Matthew Bethell won the Ella Gilbert Trophy for Junior Club Champion, beating Marcus Richardson into second. A much deserved win for the hard work he puts into his orienteering. Herbie Andrews from Norwich School was third.

It wasn’t really possible to have a fastest run-in competition this year as most courses had different final controls. However, Brown, Blue and Light Green all shared #228, and the fastest men’s run-in was shared by Glen Richardson and David Sparshott. The women’s fastest run-in was by Emma Cross.

The full list of winners is:

Due to the weather, it was decided to postpone the prize giving to our next event at Kelling Heath on 11th December at 10:00.

Our thanks go to the Peter Carlill (planner), Ben Bethell (organiser), Paul Beckett (controller) and all those that volunteered to make it a great event.
