I hope it went as smoothly for the runners as it appeared to go from my perspective, as usual thanks to the willing helpers.  With some of our regular helpers missing, there were some faces popping up in unexpected roles.  Communication with Planner (Peter) and Controller (Michael) made my prep easy.   Thanks to all, and to John Austen the Estate Manager responsible for this lovely area.

All the hard work we three put in helped to keep up the standard which NOR manages to achieve for all its events. NOR events always seem relaxed on the day which hides the work that goes in beforehand. Having been involved in the last two years on events at Sandringham & Roydon and now Ken Hill, the west side ie old WASH territory does have some cracking areas. Now joined by Ling Common, a complex runnable bramble free wooded sand dune area which though small could be become a good club small event area and certainly ideal for club and squad advanced training when full mapped.

    Controller’s Comments

Ken Hill is a really lovely hidden corner of Norfolk, the wood has a little bit of everything. The land manager has undertaken a lot of tidying and clearing which has made most of the area very runnable. Peter updated the map and then planned some very good courses, he is a planner who will spend hours in the forest looking at the actual site and then updating the map to best represent what you actually see. Peter made the task of controlling him easy and keeping Julia and myself informed at every step of the way. Thanks to the proverbial swan for organising with just the right amount of authority. Those of you who enjoyed Ken Hill spread the word that this is a must area to come to. Another thank you the John Austen for being an easy to work with estate manager, for his work in the wood and for the polite greeting at 0730, while he was walking his dogs and I came out of the undergrowth control checking. Final thanks to Mick L and Daniel who worked very hard to sort out the issues with computers and letting me practice an old skill of checking car registration numbers to ensure we had all competitors back, a small request to you the competitor please fill in the registration card as fully as possible we do need all the information especially when something going not to plan.

  • News from Club Captain – events to note

    Dear NOR members,
With the first local event of 2015 only a few days away, I want to make you aware of some of the major events coming up in the next few months.

Saturday 31st January – Thetford Thrash Day 1, otherwise known as the Icenian Trophy at Santon Downham. This is Cambridge University’s annual major event, which incorporates a team competition that we have won in the past.

Sunday 1st February – Thetford Thrash Day 2, incorporating the East Anglian Championships at Croxton. We won 9 titles when the champs were last held in Thetford forest. Can we top that this year?

Sunday 15th March – Compasssport Cup Heat in Sherwood Forest. Entries aren’t open for this one yet, but please let me know at this stage if you would be interested in travelling to this event by minibus. I don’t know who we’ll be up against yet, but as ever, our first challenge will be to get a team of 25 together.

For family reasons, I won’t be competing myself for a while, so I look forward to seeing how you all get on.
    Best wishes,
    Glen
