Organiser’s Comments

A big thanks to everyone who came and competed today. It was a brilliant event with glorious weather.

Back in January this event was planned to take place at Blickling but after talks with the National Trust we were advised that the event would have restrictions on timings and areas which we could use due to the bluebells being in flower. So, the Committee decided to look for alternate venues, a quick call to the Bawsey Estate and we had a new venue, now all we had to do was find a Planner; John stepped into this void and began planning his courses. I am sure that you will all agree he did a great job with a small area.

Many thanks to all the helpers who took on roles from registration, the start, control collecting and SI timing without them the event would not take place.

Other thanks are to Richard Wilkins the Business Development Manager of the Bawsey Estate for allowing us to use the area again for orienteering.

Karen.

Planner’s Comments

It was clear from an early stage that the way to make best use of a small, technical area such as Bawsey was to adopt a middle-distance format and I hope it provided a suitable challenge.

The narrow shape of the area and location of the smaller lake largely determined the route of the courses so I concentrated on trying to provide some route choice where possible. I also sought to ensure that competitors would have to keep in touch with the map at all times with short intervals between controls and a 1:5000 map scale meaning it was easy to overshoot.

I must admit I wasn’t expecting the nettles which sprung up in the last three weeks, but it was the small gullies and re-entrants in the more open areas which seemed to cause the most challenge for competitors.

Finally, thanks to Ben for providing his thoughts on my draft courses and checking control placement on the day and congratulations to the NOR Champions.
