Captain’s News

Wednesday club nights
Every Wednesday we meet somewhere in or near Norwich for a 1845 start for some form of o-activity. These can either be mapruns on streets, or some ‘real’ orienteering in a local wood or park. Help and advice is always available for beginners and improvers. Kids are always welcome as well, but must be accompanied by parents for the street events. We have a whatsapp group to publish details of these sessions each week. Please let me know if you’d like to be added to the group.

Sundays
Our autumn weekend program starts on 20 Sep at UEA. Not among the buildings this time, but around the greenery of Earlham Park and Colney woods and playing fields, on a new map of the area.
The event at Blickling hosts the EA schools champs, so a chance for juniors to get their hands on some medals. The main EA champs takes place at Santon Downham on 1 Nov, just inside Norfolk, but the event is being hosted by WAOC.
Then we finish 2026 with a double header night (Bryants Heath) and day (Bylaugh and Bawdeswell) weekend.

CompassSport Final – Sunday 18th October in Sussex
After winning the regional heat at Brandon in February, we shall take our place at the final of the Compasssport Trophy once again. After trips to Stirling (2022), Forest of Dean (‘23), Lancashire (‘24) and Redcar (‘25), Pippingford Park in Sussex feels almost on our doorstep. It looks like a great area, and there is also a middle-distance event on the Saturday afternoon to make a weekend of it.
CompassSport Final at Pippingford Park – MVOC
Everyone is welcome to take part in this competition. We need men, women, boys and girls to cover all the age-classes, and there is no limit to how many we can have in our team. Entry will be through me, and I’ll send out more info as and when I receive it. We will look to share transport and have booked a house for the saturday night, which still has a few beds up for grabs, so please let me know if you’d like to join us.

Possible trips in 2027
At this time of year people may be planning holidays for 2027. And plenty of NOR members have already booked flights/accommodation for o trips. There are lots of options both in the UK and abroad.

JK 2027 Easter weekend 26-29th March. Biggest annual o festival in the UK, this year takes place in the Surrey Hills. We typically have 10-15 NOR members among the thousands that attend this event each year.

O-Ringen, Stockholm, 25-31 July. Biggest o festival in the world, will be attended by over 10,000. NOR has been represented for the past 2 years, and a bunch are planning to go again in 2027. Start – O-Ringen

Scottish 6 days, Perthshire 1-6 August. This biennial event is a holiday highlight for many. Some camp, others get a cottage, all enjoy some spectacular Scottish scenery for a week. https://www.scottish6days.com/

If you’d like to find out more about any of the above, do please get in touch. I look forward to seeing you somewhere with a map in hand this autumn.
