Organiser’s Comments
Well, we were very lucky with the weather weren’t we, with even some periods of sunshine. Rain had been forecast for most of the day; however, the first drops only started to fall as I was picking up the last road signs!
Firstly, thanks to you all for coming to compete at the Sheringham Park event. I know that for some it is quite a long way to travel to the northern tip of Norfolk, but I hope that you all thought that it was worth the visit.
Sheringham Park is one of the best orienteering areas in East Anglia, both for physical and technical terrain, which was used for last year’s JHI’s. Ben, planned some excellent courses, making use of the best parts of the park and utilising most of the control sites that were used last year. The comments received from competitors, suggested that it was great to have to do ‘proper navigation’ to locate controls accurately.
Thanks to Michael Chopping for stepping in late on to be our Controller. Ben’s initial courses had been significantly longer based on last years JHI planning and results, but Michael thought that they needed to be shortened to take into account the large amount of climb.
I looked at last year’s JHI results and it is interesting to see how quick the best UK juniors are:
JHI M18 – 7.6km – winning times 45 to 50 min; SHP 2025 – 7.5km – Brown – winning time 72 min
JHI M16 – 6.1km – winning time 41 min; SHP 2025 – 5.5km – Blue – winning time 58 min
JHI M14 – 4.4km – winning time 35 min; SHP 2025 – 3.5km – Green – winning time 50 min
JHI W18 – 6.2km – winning time 49 min
JHI W16 – 4.5km – winning time 40 min
JHI W14 – 3.7km – winning time 37 min; SHP 2025 – 2.9km – Light Green – winning time 38 min
Some of the results from the East Anglian juniors are comparable with the national levels.
Well done to everyone who managed to get round their course and to those who were brave enough to go out and have a second run.
We had several newcomers to this type of event and I hope you all enjoyed the experience and will come back for more. Our next event is at Kelling Heath on Sunday 9th November, when Karen is Organiser.
Finally, a very big thank you to all the helpers and officials who volunteered. Without you we would not be able to put on these events. We are truly lucky to have such a great band of helpers within NOR, and to give up so much of their time. Special thanks to Kim for assisting me and making sure I remembered everything and to Karen for dealing with all the SI Entries issues.

Planner’s Comments
The Junior Home Internationals (JHI) competition at Sheringham Park was hosted by NOR and EAOA in October 2024. The intention this year was to make best use of an updated map at a very similar time of year and to utilise the same Planner to reduce workload.
The notion of using JHI courses would have fallen foul of a few challenges. Firstly, Routegadget would have given a rather unfair advantage to anyone who had looked. Secondly, the central area used for the JHI relays (planned by Glen) would not have been used. Lastly, the course lengths didn’t work well, and we certainly had nothing appropriate for the White, Yellow, and Orange. So, whilst by no means a total re-plan, I found myself pulling new courses together which incorporated familiar legs and some common control sites.
My aim is always to give folk little reason to run on tracks and paths (above Orange) and I’m aware that this made the courses physically challenging. The climb had already lead to shorter than usual course distances but the physicality of the terrain (and the climb) added to the challenge. The uphill finish was rather brutal – sorry!
As always, a massive thanks to all who helped to make the day go so smoothly. A special note to Mr Dave, my super sherpa.
I look forward to seeing you all at Kelling Heath in three weeks’ time. It’s another nice area and you can enjoy a meal and a pint after your run…
Ben.
Controller’s Comments
What a lovely day to be at Sheringham, early start with a head touch for first 5 or so controls before the sun made itself known. Wildlife was about and a little unhappy I was in their forest. Made it back to the finish with a little time to spare.
Ben’s courses tweaked from last year’s Home International courses I am sure challenged you; Sheringham is one of the best areas East Anglia has to offer and you saw most of the best bits. In the last two week the forest has turned into autumn colours and dumped a lot of leaves hiding some smaller tracks, luckily not affecting the junior courses.
Another NOR OC event that could not find an external controller, I was more than happy to stand in at the last moment as I did control on the day of the relays at last year’s JHIs.
A well organised event, Tim and his team covered all the bases well. I really liked the friendly informative start team and the help given to competitors, especially the discussion and help after download and ways to improve. This encourages those who have less skill to come back and enjoy our sport.
Michael.
