On the 15th of November the British Schools Orienteering Championships were held in Norfolk at Sandringham, hosted by EAOA. With just over 500 juniors running, it was a huge event, but thanks to help from NOR members and the other East Anglian clubs the event ran smoothly. Sandringham was the perfect venue, with a complex path network and intricate contour detail – the amount of climb caught some people out! The whole event had a great atmosphere, and the East Anglian junior squad raised £229 with a delicious cake stall!

Norfolk juniors performed very well, with four top tens from Norwich school – Steven Denby (year 10 boys) and William Blyth-Bartram (year 7 boys) both coming 4th and only missing out on podiums by less than 30 seconds. The Norwich School Year 7 boys team then went on to take 3rd place in the team competition. Well done to all those who competed, and many thanks to those who helped run the event!

Photos from the event can be found at the BSOA website. Results are on the “Final Details” page.

    Club Championships – King’s Forest – Sunday 22nd November

This year’s club champs will take place on Sunday 22nd November in King’s Forest, just south of Thetford. In a change from previous years, everyone should run the course appropriate for their age-group, as prescribed for East Anglian League events (M21 on brown, W80 on short green etc). Seniors will still be trying to beat the handicapper to lift the overall title, but we will be using a different algorithm to take account of different courses. This, along with the fact that none of us will be officials on the day (it’s a SUFFOC event) means we should all be able to run at roughly the same time, and there should be less hanging around than previous years, so I hope more people will stay for the presentation. This will take place at 1:00, so you could time your run to finish around 12:00-12:30, leaving enough time to recover your composure, have a bite to eat, and write your acceptance speech.

Last weekend three NOR juniors competed at the Junior Inter-Regional Championships as part of an East Anglian team made up of 17 juniors. The event consists of an individual on the Saturday, and a relay on the Sunday. East Anglia had a very successful weekend, and came 7th overall out of 12 regions, the highest they’ve placed for some years. The most impressive result of the weekend was Matthew Clarke’s (SUFFOC), who won the M14 course of the individual day by over a minute.

The NOR juniors also performed well in a high-class field, with Steven Denby placing 27th out of 41 in M14’s, Sam Nicholls 32nd on M18 and myself gaining the joint second highest place for East Anglia at 11th in the W18 class, annoyingly only a few minutes off a top 5. Tim Harrison (SUFFOC) also came 11th on the M18’s, despite running up a class.

In the relay’s there were more good results. Matthew Clarke, Tim Harrison and Bryn Wilkinson (SUFFOC) led the boys relay team into 9th place, and the girls team of Daisy Partridge (SOS), Chloe Cracknell (SOS) and myself also finished 9th. Steven Denby and Sam Nicholls were in the same team and placed 25th, coming two places above the 3rd East Anglian team. East Anglia also gained another podium (3rd) in the Ad Hoc from Josh Partridge (SOS), who ran first leg in his team.

As always it was a weekend of great orienteering and a lot of fun! It was great to see such a large team travel across to run, and hopefully we can continue bringing more juniors into the East Anglian squad. Coming 7th overall was a great achievement, especially since at our home JIRC’s in 2012 we only managed 10th.

Medal haul in London for NOR members

Fifteen NOR members took part in the 8th London City Race on Saturday bringing home medals of every colour. Over 900 competitors from the UK and overseas took part in the race which was based in Wapping with the longer courses extending into the city and around the Tower of London. The sun truly shone on a day of fantastic racing.

London City Race - WappingSteven Denby became our first ever winner at this event, beating an international field to win the M16 race, despite still being an M14 himself; he was a full 2.5 mins clear of his nearest rival.

Ella Gilbert was runner up in the Euro Youth Women’s class comprising W18/20 age groups, and Glen Richardson took third place in the M35 Vets class missing top spot by only 36 seconds. Glen also gained a podium place coming 3rd in the Night Sprint event at Imperial College on the Friday evening.
Special mention should also go to Jonathan Gilbert for his 22nd position out of 177 competitors in the hugely popular M50 class, and to Sam Nicholls and Matt Jefford who finished only 15 seconds apart after covering an actual distance of about 12k in the Euro Youth Mens class, Matt taking the honours in a time of 69.07 in 14th position.
