British Sprint and Middle Distance Championships – 11th /12th June

The British Orienteering Sprint Championships 2016 are being held on Saturday 11th June at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, East London. The race will be part of the UK Orienteering League.

On the following day, the British Orienteering Middle Distance Championships will be held on Leith Hill, near Dorking, Surrey. Leith Hill is within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The race is also part of the UK Orienteering League, giving an opportunity for a weekend of quality orienteering in the South East.

Entries for the British Sprints and British Middle Distance Championships are by pre-entry only and can be made on  Fabian4. Entries close at midnight on Sunday 22nd May 2016, but the first closing date is Sunday 17th April after which the price will increase by £4.50 for the two days.

No non-Championship courses will be offered, but both events are open to all members of the British Orienteering Federation.

  • Compass Sport Cup – Hatfield Forest – 8th May

Compass Sport Cup – Hatfield Forest – 8th May

The East Anglian round in Hatfield Forest has been rearranged for Sunday 8th May, and entries are now open on Fabian4. They will only be open until Monday 25th April, so don’t delay. For newcomers, this is the national inter-club competition. Everyone runs the course appropriate for their age group and gets points for their finishing position. Our best 25 scores are added together across all courses. The winning team progresses to the national final. This year we are up against WAOC (Cambridge), HH (Herts) and SAX (Kent). Click on this link for further event information, and to enter on Fabian4 click here.

Following  are  details of which age-groups are assigned to each course

Confusingly, there are also similar colour-coded courses available for non-competitive runners from other clubs, at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
If we end up having too many/few on any particular course, I may consider some tactical switches, but the first target is to get the required 25 entries to make up a full team. I may be able to offer some seats in a minibus from Norwich, so let me know if you’d be interested in that.

  • Competition Update

    Competition Update

As many of you are aware by now, Ella Gilbert has been over on the continent recently, as a member of the England Orienteering team. As if this wasn’t impressive enough in itself, Ella managed to come 2nd in the competition, beating all opponents from France, Belgium and Holland, and finishing runner-up behind one of her England team-mates. Ella’s result helped England to win the junior and women’s team competitions. Many many congratulations to Ella on this magnificent achievement.

Not one to put her feet up, Ella was straight back into action on her return home, at the British Night Championships in Leicestershire on Saturday night. This time Ella had to settle for 4th place. I also came 4th in my own age group, and I have to say it was a thoroughly baffling but exhilarating experience. If you’ve never tried orienteering at night, I would strongly recommend it.

GlenMidlandChampsA few more of us were in action on Sunday at the Midland Championships in Sherwood Forest. On this occasion we had 3 winners – Ella on W18, myself on M35 and Peter Leverington on M80. We also had Jonathan Gilbert 3rd on M55 and Helen Lloyd 4th in an incredibly close W55 race.

This weekend sees Ella in action again (surprise surprise). This time she will be captaining the NOR team in the Yvette Baker Trophy heat at Hockham. We have our largest and strongest team for many years, and with home advantage, our juniors have every reason to be confident as they take on the other clubs from around the region.
